augmented reality: what, how, when, where

This post was inspired by an article written by a Guest writer at IoT For All. Ok, let’s begin.

It’s unarguable that many of our grandparents are coming from the old-fashion era where things were done differently. For example, in those days, popular music such as rap or hip-hop were done in a traditional way and remained uninfluenced until contemporary music styles ate it up *literally!. Also, considering their dressing style way back, it will amaze you to know that things have really changed now.

Today, new technologies and different approach to how things should be done have taken over. Your grandparents may still be in the dark as they are unaware of Augmented Reality (AR). So, if you were called to explain to them what Augmented Reality means and how it has affected the society, where would you start from?

In this article, I will try my very best to convey the most effective and understandable explanation you can give to your grandparents and you may as well LEARN one or two NEW things from it.

What is Augmented Reality (AR) all about?

Simple, Augmented Reality or AR as it is mostly abbreviated, is a technology which uses the physical environment we can all see and interact with to superimpose computer-generated information. AR allows graphics, audio and other enhancements to be overlaid in real time thereby making it possible for users to interact with it.

One of the ways augmented reality is changing lives is through security and missions which involves rescuing individuals from dangers. For example, a 3D map of a building with its details can be overlaid for responders to use in saving anyone in danger.

I kind of understand your words, but can you mention a movie Augmented Reality (AR) was used, I will understand better with it?

Knowing well that most people understand things BETTER using pictures / audio-visuals, explaining augmented reality would be a lot easier if it has been used in a movie. Thanks to movie makers, I will be able to give at least two examples.

#1. 2002 - Minority Report

#2. 2008 - Iron Man

Are there other ways AR is being used that you haven't told me?

Yes, there are so many instances and in a matter of fact there is a game using it on mobile phones called Pokémon Go.

You can head to Lifewire to find out many other ways augmented reality is being used.

But this AR thing, does it have a future or is it just a ‘now thing’ that will disappear later?

The success of Pokémon Go shows that augmented reality is not just a ‘now thing’ but will stay for a long time. It is estimated that by year 2021, AR market would have grown to $5.7 billion.

I believe this is the easiest way to explain what augmented reality means to your grandparents. What do you think? Over to you.
