A report by Europe's law enforcement agency Europol on Sunday stated that ransomware attack carried out recently has affected more than 100,000 organizations in 150 countries.

The malware’s sole aim is to lock files and request payment from victims to unlock them. This attack hit several business, colleges and establishments across the globe. It affected shipper FedEx, train systems in Germany, a Spanish telecommunications organization Telefonica, colleges in Asia, Russia's interior ministry and hospitals in Britain were left with no choice but to dismiss patients.

India is listed among the most affected nations from the Wanna Cry ransomware attack, the Indian government has closed down few ATMs in some areas throughout the country as a safeguard against the attack.

The malware, which has been called different names such as WannaCry, Wanna Decryptor or WannaCrypt, makes a pop up window alerting users that files in their computer have being encrypted and cannot be accessed anymore until a certain amount of cash is paid.

A security flaw found in Microsoft’s Windows OS was exploited by ransomware in which many users and organizations failed to update their systems, as Microsoft had released a patch in March.

Cyber criminals are demanding a fee of about USD 300 in crypto-currencies like Bitcoin for unlocking encrypted files.

Solution: Microsoft has rolled out a security fix in March to handle the situation; users are advised to download the patch as soon as possible to avoid being a victim of the attack.
